ICC president Tomoko Akane condemns US sanctions, urges global action
International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane has urged all United Nations member states to take concrete action against growing pressure from U.S.
President Donald Trump’s administration, warning that sanctions targeting the court threaten international justice and the rule of law. Addressing the U.N. General Assembly through a prerecorded video, Akane condemned the sanctions, which have affected nine of the ICC’s 18 judges, and reaffirmed that the court would continue its work independently and impartially.
The U.S. has imposed sanctions on ICC officials over investigations involving Washington and its allies, including Israel, despite not being a member of the court.
Akane also called on countries to cooperate in enforcing outstanding arrest warrants against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Her appeal has placed Japan in a difficult diplomatic position as Tokyo seeks to maintain its support for the ICC and the international rules-based order while protecting its security alliance with the United States.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has criticized the sanctions as incompatible with Japan’s position but has avoided directly condemning Washington.
Akane warned that protecting the ICC is not simply about defending one institution, but about safeguarding an international order based on the rule of law.
