KMC calls for action to tackle air pollution

As winter approaches, Kathmandu Metropolitan City is urging residents to refrain from burning plastic waste, as this could significantly worsen air pollution levels.

Sarita Rai, the Head of KMC’s Environment Department, highlighted that the primary contributors to air pollution include vehicle emissions, dust from roads and construction sites, industrial smoke, and the harmful effects of burning plastic.

She emphasized the importance of avoiding such practices. The Chief Rai pointed out that vulnerable groups, particularly children, the elderly, and those suffering from asthma or chronic illnesses are at a heightened risk due to poor air quality.

Rai appealed to everyone to adhere to environmental norms. The department advises that vehicles should operate within established pollution limits, undergo regular maintenance to minimize emissions, and that construction materials should not be left on roads and sidewalks.

Additionally, industries, factories, and hospitals must comply with the air quality and smoke standards set by the KMC Pollution Control Standard 2081 BS, and utilize equipment designed to mitigate air pollution. (RSS)
